"She found the colors to paint him where the world had left him, Gray...."
Bajaj walked in with certain documents in his hands. His eyes dark, his jaw clenched and his aura holding the calm just like the lull before the storm.
His eyes spot Prerna sitting on their bed lost in her thoughts. His balls his hand in a fist as he approaches her “Prerna…” he calls out breaking her reverie.
She looks up and sees him standing in the middle of their room with a rigid posture, her gut senses something was really wrong. It was a few days ago when she and Anurag had a heartfelt discussion and decided to part their ways and remain like friends. Goodbyes are hard but sometimes that’s the only way.
Since the day they have married, this man has intrigued her, he was as she recalls a business machine, an egoistic narcissist, someone who doesn’t give a damn about other people emotions a ruthless rival and the worse man in her life as she recalls yet she feels she knows nothing about him.
He has covered his persona in numerous shades that no matter how much she strives she never gets to the point where she could actually see the real him.
She has read in novels that under all the pretense of the hard-core egoistic person lies a nice person “Koi bhi humesha bura nahi hota…” as they say but with this person, she just keeps on revolving around him with this theory but never have been able to put onto any shade of him.
She gets up from the bed and approaches him “Yes Mr.Bajaj…” she says as soon as she stands in front of him.
He hands her the document he was holding and she gingerly takes it asking “What is this?”
“Divorce deed…” comes a pat reply
Her head shoots up, a frown mare her forehead “Excuse me”
“A divorce deed Prerna… I’m divorcing you; I’m freeing you from all the shackles, you can leave and be with whoever XYZ you want to be with…” he replies with a clenched jaw and cold eyes.
“Is marriage a joke to you Mr. Bajaj?” she questions clenching the document in her fist as the paper crumble under the force.
He lets out a dry chuckle “this marriage is nothing but a hoax Prerna… didn’t you know that?” he raises his eyebrow at her “ I forcefully married you against your choice and now I’m freeing you from this bond isn’t that what you always wanted why aren’t you happy then…” he asks
She says nothing but looks at him with hooded eyes trying to find any signs of that support her idea of him being drunk but he looked completely sane and very much in his senses.
“What about Kuki?” she asks still not believing him
“I will take her back with me to London, I know she will cry and miss you for few days or maybe months but I think I’ll handle it…” He replies stuffing his hands in his pockets.
“What about your revenge?” she asks still unsure
Bajaj lets out a deeps sigh as he looks up then back at her “Let’s say I don’t want it anymore or say I’m bored of this Basu circus…”
She looks down at the crumpled document in her hand “So that’s it… “She asks still staring at it.
Bajaj sighs “Why? Do you want anything else?”
She looks up this time her posture rigid “Why don’t you owe me something else to Mr. Bajaj”
Bajaj raises his eyebrow quizzically at her.
She takes a step near him “Don’t you owe me an apology Mr. Bajaj?” She asks tilting her head to the side and raising an eyebrow back at him.
“I apologize…” he replies back his eyes softening for a moment and turning cold in the next second.
Prerna closes her eyes and lets out a deep sigh, the next moment she opens it there was a sheen of confidence in them “So it's my choice now, my decision?” She asks looking him dead in the eye.
Bajaj nods his head at her “Yes…”
She looks at the crumbled paper for a second, then throws it in the bin next to Mr. Bajaj “Ok then I don’t want it…” she says dusting her hands
Bajaj looks stunned, he stares at her as if she has grown two horns on her head “What?” He asks
“I said I don’t want it…” She replies shrugging her shoulders
“Why?” he asks exasperatedly
She looks at him and then taps her chin as if thinking“let’s see hmmm maybe because “Meri marzi…” She replies smiling sarcastically at him
“Prerna…” he warns
“Oh, now we are talking…” she says clapping her hands “So tell me, Mr. Bajaj, the real reason behind this generosity of yours… are you finally gracing me to witness the white shade of your personality…”
Bajaj huffs “Seriously, Prerna you really want to waste time discussing some novel crap… I gave you the damn thing that you always desired for why don’t you just leave…” annoyance and anger bidding inside him
Prerna shrugs back nonchalantly “I don’t want to…”
Bajaj takes a step in her direction invading her comfort zone “suffering from Stockholm syndrome, are we?” he asks provoking her
Prerna chuckles but still stays rooted to her spot “no, not Stockholm but surely suffering from London syndrome…”
Bajaj closes his eyes annoyingly trying to hold his composure“Leave now…” he says gesturing his hand towards the door.
“Or what…” she steps up covering the one-step distance between them and challenging him.
Bajaj just stares back at her, never for once he had encountered a stubborn Prerna and for once his heart wanted him to lose to her, his heart wished for her to be steadfast in her stubbornness and not let him win. This was the battle he never wished to win.
“Why are you doing this?” he asks staring right into her eyes.
“I don’t know…” Prerna replies back in a daze
“Don’t you love Basu, don’t you want to be with him?” no matter how much it pained him asking this he still went with it.
She nods her head at him “I did love him and I wished to be with him but I don’t seem to wish for it anymore…”
“Why?” he whispers
“I don’t know…really! I don’t know… you said it is my choice then why are you questioning it…” she asks back
“Why am I questioning it…” Bajaj snapped “don’t you think your decision might have some impact on the people around you…. You…”
“Does it have some impact over you?” She asks interrupting him
Bajaj grits his teeth and turns away from her “No it doesn’t…”
She comes over and stands in front of him again “Really, Mr. Bajaj…” she asks looking at him wide-eyed
He looks away and Prerna smiles at his gesture “You said you wanted me to know the real you and as soon as I step in the ground you start to run away… do you want me to chase you or trap you into revealing yourself to me…”
“What is that you want to know?” he asks looking back at her.
“Everything you wanted me to know and every shade you wanted to hide from me…” She replies sincerely
Bajaj lets out a mocking chuckle “sorry to break it to you but there is no white in here Prerna…” he says pointing a finger at himself “It’s all dark, even the lightest shade you’ll look for will be gray…”
Prerna stares at his dejected form and smiles “Isn’t that a mixture of black and white…”
Bajaj grunts “the darkness consumes light Prerna, leave when you can…”
Prerna hides her smile as and looks away “I believe in the same ideology but in a reverse way, light shines in the darkness and if I ever felt like regretting…” She looks back at him with mischievous shine in her eyes “I will escape…”
Bajaj chuckles looking away “If you surely want to stay then I should probably look for a house on a stranded island…”
She laughs at his suggestion “you think I won’t be able to escape from an island…”
He holds out his hands towards her, his eyes finally dropping the cold mask they wore and love taking its place, his heart letting its guard down “I don’t doubt your capabilities… but will you?”
She smiles shaking her head in negative and finally taking his hand.
